The Seagull
Anton Chekhov
Nina returns after years away, now a struggling actress, to see Treplev one last time.
I'm a seagull. No, that's not it. Do you remember you shot a seagull? A man came along by chance, saw it and destroyed it, just to pass the time. A subject for a short story. That's not it.
Nina, I cursed you; I hated you; I tore up your letters and photographs, but I was conscious every minute that my soul was bound to yours for ever.
Why does he talk like this, why does he talk like this?
I am alone in the world, warmed by no affection. I am as cold as though I were in a cellar, and everything I write is dry, hard, and gloomy. Stay here, Nina, I entreat you, or let me go with you!
Why does he talk like this, why does he talk like this?
I loved you from the first day I saw you. I am still in love with you. I love you.
I know, I remember. Don't, please don't! I must go. Give me some water.
Where are you going now?
To the town. Is your mother here? Never mind, it doesn't matter. Don't see me off. I can go alone. My carriage is not far away.
